Simon Bruce

Senior Counsel

Farrer & Co

Simon Bruce was brought up in Lancashire.

He studied Classics and Modern Languages at Trinity College, Oxford.

He has worked at Farrer & Co LLP in London for 35 years, becoming Senior Counsel in 2019 in order to work pro bono alongside his work at that firm.  He started Law Centre work in November.

Simon has had four family law cases that have been in the Supreme Court.

This includes the recent landmark children and abduction cases Re A (Children) (AP); and Re B (A child), which redefined the concept of “habitual residence” and will be quoted in global jurisprudence for decades to come.

He represented Katrin Radmacher, whose 2010 case was all about autonomy - in this case, the right of an independently wealthy wife to determine her future and protect her wealth.  Radmacher has been particularly significant in establishing the importance of pre-marital and post-marital contracts in family law.

Simon also acted for Yasmin Prest in the 2013 Supreme Court case of Prest and Petrodel, the leading case in English jurisprudence on piercing the corporate veil. The case on its facts, and happily for Yasmin, escaped the principle of corporate inviolability.
Simon has been ranked in leading independent legal directories Chambers UK and The Legal 500 for many years. The most recent coverage says:
Chambers HNW 2019:
Simon is "a port in a storm, the most unflappable lawyer I've ever met. Nothing could ever happen that could cause him to get flustered.  He's totally calm, and his calmness makes the clients calm."
Simon Bruce is "at the top of his tree in terms of reputation and ability," according to market insiders. He is a highly experienced family practitioner with particular expertise in international family law cases and as a mediator.
Chambers UK 2018:
The "exceptional" Simon Bruce speaks fluent French and frequently acts on complex, international finance matters. Commentators describe him as "an exceptionally intuitive lawyer with a brilliant tactical brain," while also highlighting his "fantastic bedside manner" and ability to "manage expectations realistically in a really helpful manner”.
He is a trustee of theatre company Dreamthinkspeak, and of music charity British Suzuki Institute. He’s a chess player.  He is a Christian, the son of a priest, and a reader on Prayasyougo.
Simon supports Liverpool FC home and away, and has been a member of the Liverpool FC supporters club from the age of 18.

He is a qualified Football Association referee.

Simon is married to Emma, and they have four adult children, two boys and two girls.
