Alison is a highly experienced criminal barrister. She joined Kingsley Napley in January 2020 from the public sector where, over a thirty-four year career as a government lawyer, she was a Registrar at the Criminal Appeal Office and then a prosecutor at Crown Prosecution Service Headquarters in London.

Whilst Alison’s first love is extradition law, she has also had conduct of cases involving the prosecution of serving police officers, election offences, Unduly Lenient Sentences, Gross Negligence Manslaughter and cases involving Mutual Legal Assistance. She therefore brings to the firm a varied and deep understanding of the prosecutor’s perspective.

Extradition expertise
In Alison’s 29 years’ experience of extradition she has represented numerous Requesting States both inside and outside the EU in cases involving offences of all kinds. Latterly she specialised in extradition requests from the Government of the United States of America and the Russian Federation.

Alison has also done a considerable amount of extradition policy work and has lectured and conducted seminars to a variety of audiences on behalf of several different organisations and groups both in the UK and abroad. She has worked with the UN in a number of countries including the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Azerbaijan. She has engaged in bi-literal meetings in several countries including the USA,  the Russian Federation, Croatia and Italy and worked with Eurojust lecturing around EU member states. Amongst her policy work

• Alison was the sole UK representative and accredited UK expert on a UN Working Group which wrote and published a comprehensive guide to extradition laws and procedures in the Western hemisphere.
• She has drafted and negotiated new extradition treaties.
• She was part of the team who advised the Home Office on law and procedures when the Extradition Act 2003 was drafted and was part of the review team in 2011 into the working of the Act.
• She was part of the policy team who advised the Home Office when the EAW was introduced and lectured both here and in Europe on its introduction and application.
• She has represented the CPS on several working groups at the NCA and Interpol on the operation of Red Notices.
