Alexander Mellis
Barrister
No5 Barrister Chambers
Alexander’s practice involves a wide range of personal injury work including:
Road traffic accidents, Highways Act claims, employers’ liability claims, occupiers’ liability and industrial disease claims. Alexander is instructed on behalf of both Claimants and Defendants for a wide variety of hearings, including costs and case management conferences, strikeout applications, MoJ Stage 3 hearings and trials on both the small claims and fast tracks. Alexander has extensive experience in fixed cost cases originating within the RTA and EL/PL Portals, as well as experience dealing with cases falling outside of the Portals.
Along with a busy court based practice, Alexander also undertakes a wide array of paperwork in fast-track and multi-track cases. This includes advising on liability and quantum and drafting Particulars of Claim, Defences, Part 18 Requests for Further Information and Part 35 Questions to Experts.
Alexander has increasing experience of claims involving fraud and fundamental dishonesty for the purposes of both QOWCS and s.57 Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015. In particular Alexander has experience drafting and amending Defences pleading such points.
Alexander also has experience of claims to the Criminal Injury Compensation Authority. These have been particularly sensitive cases with vulnerable clients. In one case Alexander successfully appealed the CICA’s decision on a whether to consider a claim arising from historical abuse in a family context. In another Alexander secured a settlement for a child claimant who was the survivor of sexual abuse. This case required on the one hand advising the Litigation Friend on the legal technicalities of CICA cases whilst on the other also ensuring that the child’s own wishes and views were heard and considered.
Alexander has also been instructed in inquests. In the most notable example he was instructed on behalf of an interested party to an inquest where the coroner recorded a verdict of Unlawful Killing. The client was the last person to see the deceased, a bed-bound elderly lady, before discovering her in bed the next morning. In the night she was subject to a vicious assault that led to her being hospitalised, where she ultimately passed away.
