Corporate manslaughter

The Sentencing Guidelines Council advised the courts that punishment for corporate manslaughter should be punitive and make a considerable impact on the defendant. It recommended that appropriate fines should seldom be less than £500,000 but may be up to millions of pounds. Furthermore, it gave the courts additional powers to issue publicity orders to convicted corporate defendants, who may be required to publicise their conviction, the particulars of the offence and the amount of any fine imposed.
